Mining has historically been a dirty business riddled with air pollution, safety concerns, and life threatening collapses or machinery failure. It’s a legacy business that is oftentimes shunned as being phased out of existence, despite the necessity of minerals, whether it be coal, copper, or lithium. Mining is a necessary evil. Mining operations are vital for virtually everything that isn’t made of petroleum.
One of the biggest challenges faced in the industry is that we have this “not in my backyard” mentality in the US, in which the dirty industry is better done offshore. This realization is most prominently seen with respect to new lithium mines, which isn’t the focus on today’s report. My interest is in rare earth elements, or REEs for short. Rare earth elements scored the title not necessarily because the elements themselves are rare, but because it is rare to find them in large quantities.
